Powerful Video Highlights the Dangers of Being LGBTQ in Jamaica
Living in a country where sodomy is illegal.
Logo Global Ally and Where Love Is Illegal traveled together to Jamiaca to document the lives of LGBTQ individuals in a country where homosexuality isn't illegal, but "acts of gross indecency" are under The Buggery Act. This qualifies sodomy as being worth 10 years of imprisonment, making for an oppressive social structure that keeps Jamaican queers on the fringes.
Throughout the video, called This is Who I Am, disenfranchized Jamaicans are shown reflecting on the daily dangers they face, from people threatening to shoot them or throwing stones on the streets. For safety reasons, one admits they don't go out much, because as the mini-doc highlights, 80 percent of Jamaicans believe homosexuality is "immoral."
