EXCLUSIVE: First Look At 'Husbands' Comics

Husbands5%20633x_0

Take a dive into the new digital comic series from the hit online sitcom by Jane Espenson and Brad Bell. Exclusive panel art included!

We have been anticipating the digital comic for Husbands from Dark Horse Comics ever since we first learned (and looked) at it last month (read the story here). The comic series takes the Husbands characters--Cheeks (played by Bell), Brady (Sean Hemeon), and Haley (Alessandra Torresani)--and immortalizes them through graphic illustration.

Entering the first issue, or rather "episode," we see the cast rummaging through a pile of wedding gifts. Brady discovers a book that magically turns into a comic book upon his touch. Well, you can only guess what happens next.

As mentioned previously, the characters will end up in an alternate universe where they will have super powers and other heroic abilities. While true for the first issue, there will also be a different theme/alternate universes for each issue following (making use of the comic book industry style for having many worlds and versions of their popular characters).

Espenson and the boys released general topics for the themes at the Husbands panel during this year's New York Comic Con. As they explained, each of these thematic adventures will be used to help the pair adjust to everyday obstacles in their new married life. What a great and fun wedding gift!

The first four include the superhero theme; a fairytale (no pun intended) in medieval times; a detective-esque mystery; and an out-of-this-world adventure in a galaxy far, far away.

Each issue the brings the Husbands-y dynamic we've enjoyed on the sitcom, and manages to maintain the tone no matter what scenario the characters end up in.

Make sure to keep an eye out for the Husbands' "H" logo throughout, and where the funny and bubbly (as in booze-filled ) Haley appears in some of the worlds. The first issue is available online here, for a very affordable 99 cents for all to enjoy (recommended age 14+). Artwork for the series is by Ron Chan, Natalie Nourigat, Benjamin Dewey, M.S. Corley, and Tania del Rio.

And as the last panel preview reads, "Our famous newlyweds and their tiny drunken friend swirl through a vortex of time and ink. Have they learned all the lessons that the universe is determined to teach them? Are the headed home?"

Who knows what will happen after the final issue of the series. Of course it would be amazing to see them crossover into some of the worlds of the gay heroes from DC Comics or Marvel (which if you've been out of the loop, here is a recap of the year for you).

Until next time Husbands fans!

(FYI, now only available in digital format, the printed graphic novel collection of the series will be released March 27, 2013)
