Ellen DeGeneres Talks About Her New Lifestyle Brand

The comedian says she wants to dedicate herself to design after TV

Following in the footsteps of other media tycoons such as Martha Stewart and Ryan Seacrest, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres announced earlier this year that she would launch her own lifestyle brand, E.D., with the support of her wife, Arrested Development's Portia de Rossi. Now, the gay icon is spilling more details about it in Vogue.

"When I someday decide to stop doing the show," Ellen told Hamish Bowles, "my entire focus is going to be design." Though she may not look it with her bubbly, TV-friendly personality, Ellen's background is not only steeped in comedy, but also in flipping houses. Talking about her life prior to making it big as a stand-up comedian, she explains that she used to make as much money renovating houses as she did on the stage: "When I think about decorating," Ellen says, "that's when I start to meditate." In April, she talked extensively to The New York Times about her passion for architecture and design.

Citing her own past, Ellen explains "I did the Pier 1 thing when I had no money...I still understand that everyone should be able to have great design in their home." With five apparel designers, five homeware designers, and two textile designers already on her staff, Ellen wants to translate her own collegiate style, as well as her wife's more movie-star aesthetic, into a line of clothing and houseware that will make high-end design more accessible for the consumers.

Ellen plans to launch E.D. with a capsule holiday collection, and more items will become available next year through her E.D. website, slated to launch in spring 2015. There will also be pop-up shops, and yet-to-be-named retail partners. Once established, the brand also plans to tackle ceramics, stationery, rugs, bedding, candles, and both men's and women's clothing. Are you ready for the Ellen home invasion?
