Little over a year ago, we connected with Jose Abellar and David Ayala, the business-and-life partners behind the then-upstart clothing label Gilbert & Lewis. Together, Abellar and Ayala seemed hellbent on taking the traditional nerd archetype and infusing it with elements of dandyism and contemporary street influences. The result was neither too twee nor too unkempt--striking a refreshing balance of effortless polish...with a just a hint of sly impishness. But as each season comes and goes, every brand must evolve. For fall, it seems that there's an underlying sense that the collection's dorky muse has been enlisted to embark on a countryside fishing trip. Expertly-cut, unstructured outerwear in tweed and buffalo checks are certainly standouts, as are their signature slim-collared button-downs and narrow pants. A cobalt blue waxed coat and work/play sweats with cargo pant detailing are highlights as well.
