Siki Im is somewhat an exception in the menswear landscape. Arguably one of the most intellectual creatives working today, he introduced his latest collection at NYFWM with a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil ("Whoever battles monsters should take care that he doesn't become one in the process. And if you stare for a long time into an abyss, the abyss looks into you, too."), a brainy decision that would get lost with most of the attendees, too busy snapping Instagrams and tweeting as the show unfolded.
The monsters Im referred to were stomping the runway bearing face paint and multiple piercings on a heavy metal soundtrack. The clothes were dark, often shown in all-black or crimson ensembles; yet they felt fresh and incredibly wearable, making the models look like an elegant horde of vampires, which the designer called the "Undead" -- the title of his collection. Somewhere between a rave-savvy Dracula and a millenial reboot of The Lost Boys, the show had an eerie feel, and electrified the Fashion Week schedule this season.
