In 1975, business executive P. Roy Vagelos continued to study DHT levels in the brain and how they directly lead to male growth irregularities, often in the form of a larger prostate. Vagelos sought to create a drug to counteract this imbalance of DHT in order to help decrease the size of the prostate. The outcome was a new pharmaceutical named finasteride. Finasteride proved to be very effective in decreasing the size of the prostate, as it balanced out the hormonal and chemical changes in the brain. It also showed to improve hair loss and thinning hair, a side "benefit" discovered merely by happenstance. Finasteride was later prescribed as Propecia in the 90's, and has been the leading treatment for hair loss and premature balding even though it is equally known for its severe side effects.

Fortunately, we know a lot more about hair loss and thinning than we did in 1975. Entire fields of study are now dedicated to hair loss, and new research is developed specifically with hair loss in mind, instead of being a tangential result from an unconnected study, like finasteride.

The latest research shows that stress and inflammation in the body are directly related to hair loss--in addition to hormonal fluctuations. Stress, once thought to cause short-term hair loss, is now linked to long-term thinning and loss (with a need to consistently address).
