The Oscar nominee took to Instagram to share the news.

Ava DuVernay, the Oscar-nominated director behind A Wrinkle in Time, Selma, and 13th, has posted about the historic directing hires made on the new Star Wars film.

Star Wars: Episode IX will see director J.J. Abrams returning to the franchise to continue the storylines he began in The Force Awakens, but will also see a woman of color, Victoria Mahoney, working as the Second Unit Director. She's worked as a director on several television shows and as a character actor in Legally Blonde.
