Announced early Wednesday morning, President-elect Donald Trump was chosen as Time Magazine's Person of the Year for 2016--referenced as the "President of the divided states of America."
Time also named Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton as the official runner-up, even though she was the top pick in a Today show poll.
"To be on the cover of Time as Person of the Year is a tremendous honor," Trump told The Today Show.
Each year Time magazine'sPerson of the Year is someone who has most influenced the news throughout the year, "for better or for worse."
"So which is it this year: Better or worse? The challenge for Donald Trump is how profoundly the country disagrees about the answer," wroteTime managing editor Nancy Gibbs.
This isn't the first time Time has chosen someone as unpopular as Trump for their cover--past winners for Person of the Year include Adolf Hitler in 1938, Joseph Stalin in 1939, and Vladimir Putin in 2007.
