The Republican presidential nominee is still courting religious conservatives by naming former rival and anti-gay Santorum to new Catholic Advisory Council.

Donald Trump, who has been lauded as the Republican Party's most LGBT-friendly presidential candidate, appointed gay rights opponent Rick Santorum to be a campaign advisor.

Santorum, a former rival for the presidential nomination, will join Trump's Catholic Advisory Council, Trump's campaign announced Thursday.

The council will consult on issues including abortion rights, health care, and taxation, among others.

Santorum has staunchly resisted hallmark civil rights for LGBT Americans, such as same-sex marriage and anti-discrimination protections, and he is a firm believer in the so-called "religious liberty" movement that often denies LGBTs several services. He endorsed Trump for president this spring.

Trump will meet Hillary Clinton in the race's first debate Monday evening.
