Readers' Choice Award Nomination: Dan Savage
The author, journalist, activist, and TV personality remains a critical voice that inspires others to question both conservatives and the LGBT establishment
After same-sex marriage passed in Washington State in the 2012 election, Savage and his partner, Terry Miller, were part of the ceremonial first group of couples to receive a state marriage license that December. The high-profile couple also founded the It Gets Better Project, to help suicidal young people who are struggling with identity issues, and have hosted It Gets Better specials on MTV to reach a wider audience.
The author, editor, and activist continues to juggle being the editorial director of Seattle's The Stranger with writing his syndicated newspaper column, and working with MTV on his college-based advice show, Savage U. But most people know him as the sex-positive host of his podcast, "Savage Love," offering advice to many heterosexual women and men still trying to figure it all out (in the bedroom, or wherever they may be).
