This Brooklyn-based fashion designer, artist and stylist hopes to be Out’s Fashion Vanguard.
Kim Mesches passion for design grew out of a high school year's hobby of painting old pairs of sneakers with unique graphics and graffiti. Soon, his classmates noticed his custom kicks and began placing orders of their own. Since then, he has gone on to make custom footwear for Nike, Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def and others. He later attended the Fashion Institute of Technology, where he got his degree in Fashion Design.
Today, Kim has moved beyond just footwear. He started his own clothing company, KIM MESCHES, as well as a line of womenswear named KIMBO. Kim describes his style as "graphic chic," which is evident in the pieces he creates; they are structured, edgy, and form-fitting, a mix Kim seems to have mastered. His fashion inspirations include Nicolas Ghesquiere and Alexander McQueen.
When asked why he should be Out's first Fashion Vanguard, Kim says, "As a designer I put my life into my passion. Creating pieces and having them worn is the biggest thrill. I bring new innovative design and original fabric treatments that haven't been done before, while maintaining a wear-ability and an original voice."
Meet the other two Out Fashion Vanguard Finalists Andrew Morrison and Marcel Coleman Jr.. Stay tuned to see all three progress as they each design a custom look to be showcased at the Out Fashion Vanguard Awards in Los Angeles on March 30th.
