Andreja Pejic made history this year, becoming the first transgender model to appear in the pages of American Vogue. "Society doesn't tell you that you can be trans," Pejic said in her interview with the magazine, describing the distress she experienced trying to live as a man. "I thought about being gay, but it didn't fit." The 24-year-old Bosnian war refugee, who was raised in Australia, rose to fame as an androgynous model in the late 2000s and became a muse to designer Jean Paul Gaultier, before announcing her transition publicly in 2014. Since then, Pejic has landed high-profile campaigns for Make Up For Ever and Kenneth Cole, and become an inspiration for trans youth the world over. "As a woman who was born trans, I know what it's like to be different, to be an outcast and to be defined only by 'that thing' which makes you a little different," Pejic says. "However, I care more about inclusion and equality than feeling special. The future is fluid, and nothing adds more to progress than humanity united."
