Though he's known to American fans as Kevin on HBO's Looking, for most of his career British actor Russell Tovey didn't play gay. His big break was as Rudge in the original 2004 stage production of The History Boys, which toured around the world. Afterward, he transitioned to TV, for his turn as the werewolf George Sands on the BBC hit Being Human. But it wasn't until the recent film Pride and stage show The Pass that he took up conflicted gay parts. This year, he returned to the BBC, playing a straight, outdoorsy bloke in the drama Banished, and then to Broadway in the much-anticipated revival of Arthur Miller's A View From the Bridge, directed by Ivo van Hove. As he explained to The Guardian this year: "I never felt ready, or [like I knew] where I wanted my career to go. I never felt in charge of anything. And then it got to a point where I thought: now."
