FILMMAKER
MICHAEL PATRICK KING
It's hard to think of a film in 2008 that got gays as keyed up as Michael Patrick King's
Sex and the City. As if the television phenom weren't queer enough, the writer&director&producer cast Dreamgirl Jennifer Hudson as Carrie Bradshaw's assistant, stuffed the summer blockbuster with more eye-popping wardrobe changes than Iron Man had special effects, and tossed in a soaking-wet penis shot to boot.
Grossing $57 million its first weekend,
Sex and the City became the highest-earning opener ever in both the R-rated comedy and TV-adaptation genres, and its success traveled well: The DVD sold nearly 1 million copies in its first week of U.K. release, becoming the fastest-selling DVD of the year there. Think you hear the sound of clinking cosmo glasses in the distance? That's because King has already begun writing the script for SATC's sequel.
