Batman v Superman's Greatest Gift to the World: Sad Affleck

In the murky depths of YouTube, where memes and other forms of insidious mockery are generated, even Batman himself cannot withstand the force of social media.

Now that justice has dawned and the world's biggest crossover movie ever has landed--clunkily--in theaters, the fallout reveals that Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice ain't that good. With a critical 29% on Rotten Tomatoes and falling, the consensus seems to be that the film's grim feel and overladen special effects cloud any potential for character development or a sensible plot. Surprise, surprise.

This reaction, it seems, is taking a toll on poor, poor Ben Affleck. The actor's errant moment of boredom and/or indifference during the press junket for the film--which surely felt just as tedious and overlong as the movie it promotes--has become fodder for a whole slew of YouTube video remixes riffing on "Sad Ben Affleck."

To the tune of Simon & Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence," the camera slowly zooms in on Ben as he stares forlornly to somewhere on the ground in front of him, as his cheerful co-star Henry Cavill talks about...who knows.

The end of the video is rather perfect, when the interviewer interrupts the sad reverie to get Ben's take on it. Affleck's answer is a priceless "I agree."

Looking back, perhaps BvsS director Zack Snyder and co-executive producer Chris Nolan should have remembered what every comic book fan knows: when superheroes get cocky, they run into trouble. Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice seemed pretty cocky to us from the start.
