Currently filming their 12th season, the kooky cast of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has invited to the set a lesbian high school student who was kicked out of her prom for wearing a suit.
The LGBT-friendly cast also marched in the Philly Pride parade last Sunday. "We were trying to find the right avenue to show public support for some time," show co-creator and star Rob McElhenney, who was raised by two women and has a gay brother, told Out. "It's a community we've been involved with since we were little kids. We are one of the gayest familes in the Northeast corridor," he joked.
McElhenney said the rest of the cast, including Charlie Day and Kaitlin Olson, were beyond stoked to have been a part of the Pride celebrations, too.
McElhenney also talked about high school student Aniya Wolf, who was dismissed from her prom for wearing a tuxedo. Wolf, a junior at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, Pa. was asked to leave the event on the grounds of not respecting the dress code. The story even received Hillary Clinton's attention.
When McElhenney heard of this, he took to Twitter to invite Wolf to be on the show when they shoot in Philly later this month:
After a public tweet exchange, it looks like the high schooler is set to guest on the show.
It's Always Sunny will return to FX in January 2017, and only time will tell as to whether all those gay jokes about McElhenney's character Mac actually means anything. "We'll have to see," McElhenney teases. "The joke isn't that Mac's gay, people aren't making fun of him because he's gay," he says. "They're making fun of him because he's a hardcore staunch conservative Christian...who also may be a closeted homosexual."
