Pedro Almodovar talked recently about the gay movie classic that got away.
The director revealed in a podcast with Empire that he was close to directing the film Brokeback Mountain. Directed by Ang Lee, the film follows the epic forbidden love story of two cowboys struggling to deal with their feelings for one another, played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal.
But what exactly would Almodovar have done differently in his film?
"My version of Brokeback Mountain would have had a lot more sex."
Almodovar said that the relationship between the characters in the short story by Annie Proulx was more animalistic. The sex between Ennis and Jack was the defining part of their relationship. Romantic love came as a shock to them both.
Almodovar said that he loved the actors and the script. He also admitted that his version may have been a bit difficult to carry out in Hollywood.
Regardless of the amount of gay sex, the movie still remains a defining time in gay representation with mainstream media.
That's not to say, though, that our imaginations aren't running wild with the idea of what could have been.
