Is Sex With a Didgeridoo Cultural Appropriation?
Men.com is under fire for sexy cultural theft.
As queer people, we should be especially sensitive to cultural appropriation--no one is arguing that fact. But this entire story is so ridiculous it borders on surreal: A gay porn studio is facing critiques for using a didgeridoo in porn. Yes, exactly the way you're imagining it.
Men.com's new scene features roommates who return from their vacation to Australia and decide to use their new souvenir for some hot fun. But the use of the didgeridoo is being called into question as it's an artifact of Australian Aboriginal communities. We're not quite sure if the issue is purely that the ceremonial object is being used in an obscene way or that both actors appear to be white and American. Maybe it's both?
An article in Australia's Star Observer claims that the porn is "incredibly disrespectful to the Australian Aboriginal communities," with a commenter adding that the film is "incredibly racist and culturally offensive... don't laugh, get angry."
