Photographer Cindy Sherman's Now Public Instagram is Bats**t Bizarre

Photographer Cindy Sherman has made her Instagram public, revealing a mix of personal photos and manipulated self-portraits, which have all been private since she made her account in October. Famous for reinventing herself through self-portraits before the digital age of selfies and iPhone retouching, Sherman's new work appears to dive deep into contemporary image-making, while maintaining her original love for embodying new, dramatic characters.

As ArtNet highlights, Sherman's subverted selfies began appearing in mid-May with the caption, "Selfie! No filter, hahaha." It's unclear whether or not she's strategically using the platform to create a proper photo series, though the line today between art and online entertainment is becoming increasingly blurred. In some photos, she's shown with digitally applied false lashes and flush cheeks and in others, she captures herself with IVs in the hospital--a balance of superficial subject matter with more intimate, walls down glimpses into Sherman's life.
