A new Captain America is in town.
This year, Marvel is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the first Avenger with a new limited series. Writer Christopher Catwell and artist Dale Eaglesham are teaming for The United States of Captain America, a new limited series where Captain America's shield has been stolen. Steve Rogers teams up with Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, and John Walker (who have each been Captain America at some point) to go on a cross-country road trip to find it. As they make their way around the country, they meet several heroes who were inspired to become local Captains America for their own communities.
The first issue of The United States of Captain America has them meeting the Captain America of the Railways, Aaron Fischer, who is gay. He's introduced in a bonus story written by writer Josh Trujillo and illustrated by Jan Bazaldua.
"Aaron is inspired by heroes of the queer community: activists, leaders, and everyday folks pushing for a better life," Trujillo said in a release. "He stands for the oppressed, and the forgotten. I hope his debut story resonates with readers, and helps inspire the next generation of heroes."
Yes, we have our first twink Captain America.
Bazaldua is thankful for the opportunity to have helped create the character. "I really enjoyed designing him, and as a transgender person, I am happy to be able to present an openly gay person who admires Captain America and fights against evil to help those who are almost invisible to society."
Bazaldua added, "while I was drawing him, I thought, well, Cap fights against super-powerful beings and saves the world almost always, but Aaron helps those who walk alone in the street with problems that they face every day. I hope people like the end result!"
Each issue will introduce a new local Captain America, showing off the diversity of the country and the people who step up to be heroes. Fischer's issue will release June 2.
