“I believe living in creating an open and positive home so they are able to express themselves.”
In an effort to dispel the ignorance that Mario Lopez put forward last week with his comments about transgender children, one of the women from the Real Housewives franchise has revealed that she is the proud mother of a transgender son.
Cindy Barshop, the health spa entrepreneur from the fourth season of The Real Housewives of New York City, toldPeople that one of her 9-year-old twins is trans.
"When a child feels comfortable and open, identity issues are able to be discussed in the family environment," she said. "I believe in creating an open and positive home so they are able to express themselves."
The Real Housewives alum told People that she came forward in the hopes that others might learn what it's actually like to parent a trans child, as opposed to the garbage Lopez spewed in an interview last week.
"I'm hoping that the more awareness that we bring that people understand that trans is an identity and has absolutely nothing to do with sexuality," Barshop said.
Speaking to rightwing personality Candace Owens in a video interview, Lopez had said that it was "dangerous" for the parents of trans kids to affirm their child's gender.
"I am trying to understand it myself, and please don't lump me into that whole [group]," he said. "If you're three years old and you're saying you're feeling a certain way or you think you're a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be, I just think it's dangerous as a parent to make this determination then, okay, you're going to a boy or a girl."
Lopez has since apologized for his comments, calling them "insensitive" and "ignorant."
