“I hope you can see me like I see myself now.”
Sam Smith has officially changed their pronouns, announcing in an Instagram post that from now on they will go by "them/them."
The Sunreported this morning that Smith had asked their family and friends to start using their new pronouns -- although the paper still referred to Smith by he/him pronouns in the story. This seems to have inspired Smith to publicly announce the change, which they did in an Instagram post.
"I've decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM," Smith wrote. "After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I've decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out. I'm so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I've been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but fuck it! I understand there will be many mistakes and mis gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you."
Smith added that they are "at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non binary but I can't wait for the day that I am." The pop star initially came out as nonbinary and genderfluid in an interview with Jameela Jamil in March. Rather than speaking about their gender, Smith plans to be "VISIBLE and open." Smith then tagged a number of nonbinary and trans figures including Munroe Bergdorf, Chella Man, and Alok Vaid-Menon. "These are activists and leaders of the non binary/trans community that have helped me and given me so much clarity and understanding."
