Lil Nas X is on the cover of CR Men, on newsstands October 9, but he's not just bringing his smoldering face or killer fashion sense. The Billboard Hot 100 champ also reveals new details about his personal life, which he says is moving in a brand new direction.
In the interview, Lil Nas X talked about everything from his quick rise to fame, his unique style, to his current fashion collaboration with designer Christian Cowan -- he recently teamed up with the designer on a collection aimed at benefiting Black LGBTQ+ youth. But it was his comments on romance that got tongues wagging. Even though he has several hit singles, award wins, and the record for most weeks at number one under his belt, the singer is still only 21, so he's not ready to settle down yet, but he might be ready for his own next steps.
"I'm dating someone right now," the singer told CR Men, "We're not in a relationship yet, but it's been on and off for the past few months." The feature gave no indication of who the mystery man is, but whoever it is, Lil Nas X is enjoying the experience. "I'm maybe going to try to go steady this time," he added.
He also talked the difficulty of dating, and just going out in public, as a gay superstar. "I feel like if I put any guy solo in a picture with me, we're automatically dating," he said. Not even his own family is safe from these rumors. "One time, I was sitting in Subway with my brother, and then a few hours later was [a headline], 'Lil Nas X and his boyfriend eating Subway to celebrate 17 weeks at number one," he laughed.
But not everything is a laughing matter. The singer also revealed that when he came out, his father struggled with accepting the news, something he's spoken about before. According to Lil Nas X, his dad "said some very Christian things" about being gay, even that it "could be the devil tempting" him. But he didn't let that stop him or get him down. "It sucks, but I guess I saw it coming," the singer added.
All this comes off the back of the start taking home 13 Billboard Music Award nominations this year. That event will be broadcast on October 14. And maybe it'll be the start of a whole new era for the performer.
"Gettin in shape for the biggest era of my life thus far," he wrote cryptically on Instagram this morning. We truly can't wait to see what happens with that.
