Sam Smith Finally Addresses Rumors About Doing Poppers In a Club

Last December we were hearing about Nicole Scherzinger doing poppers with her boyfriend at a gay club alongside Sam Smith. Well now, Smith wants to clear a few things up about that tidbit.

"I can completely confirm - I love poppers," the nonbinary pop star said in an interview on Andy Cohen's Sirius XM radio show Radio Andy. "I love poppers. I've been ashamed to say that, but I have so much fun when I do poppers."

The Sun reported back in December that Smith and X-Factor judge Scherzinger were spotted sniffing poppers in the London gay bar Freedom along with her new boyfriend, ex-rugby star Thom Evans. According to the account, a fellow clubgoer spotted the group and later posted online about the events.

"Last night was so weird," they wrote. "I ended up caught between Nicole Scherzinger and her fit rugby boyfriend and Sam Smith." The source said that Scherzinger's pals started "offering their poppers around" and that he "got to sniff the same bottle that Nicole used."

Poppers is slang for a range of inhaled chemical psychoactive drugs, and, in particular, amyl nitrite. Known as vasodilators, they dilate the blood vessels and provide the user with a rush of lightheadedness and euphoria. Another popular effect is the loosening of the anal sphincter. Their use is not uncommon among the gay bar and club scenes.

While Smith had been slow to confirm the December story as well as their love of poppers, they were quick to point out that they were not endorsing their use by their fans.

"Some people would look at that and think that it's not good," they said in the interview. "And I'm not trying to endorse that because I know they're not good for you. But booze isn't good for you as well, right? But it's not the same thing, it's not the same thing."
