Kristen Stewart doesn't care about winning an Oscar, but that won't stop her from winning one!
In an interview with Variety's Award Circuit podcast, the Best Actress frontrunner addressed the Oscar race she's leading thanks to her role as Princess Diana in Pablo Larrain's Spencer.
For Stewart, it's not about the awards.
"I don't give a s**t," the actress said on the podcast. "The Oscars are such a funny thing. There are so many incredible movies and performances that barely get seen. It definitely says something about where we're at as a cumulative presence -- what we're looking at, what we care about."
"I really appreciate that something that I was involved in has ignited such a large conversation," she conceded. "We don't make movies to not connect with each other."
Still, she's not counting down the days until the Oscars (which will take place on Sunday, March 27, 2022 by the way).
Stewart's portrayal of Diana has been widely praised, with critics and fans saying that she gives new life to the beloved princess and gives one of the best performances of her career, and of the year.
Stewart isn't the only queer actress in the middle of this year's Best Actress Oscar race. Lady Gaga is also a frontrunner for her performance in House of Gucci as Patrizia Reggiani, the woman who married Maurizio Gucci in the '70s before ultimately being charged with hiring a hitman to murder him after he cheated on her. After her Oscar near-miss for 2018's A Star Is Born, Gaga is coming out swinging this year.
Tessa Thompson is also gaining significant buzz for her role as Reenie Redfield, in Passing. Redfield is a light-skinned Black woman in Harlem who finds that one of her childhood friends is now living as a white woman in Chicago. Thompson has already been nominated for the Gotham Independent Film Award for Outstanding Lead Performance for the role.
Nominations for the 94th Academy Awards will be announced on February 8, 2022.
