“I am very proud to be a trans woman.”
American singer, songwriter, and musician Ezra Furman revealed she is a transgender woman and mother in an emotional post to Instagram Wednesday. The 34-year-old indie folk-rock singer said she had been initially hesitant to make the revelation, but felt the times called for more visible examples of trans people and parents. Furman uses she/they pronouns.
"I wanted to share with everyone that I am a trans woman," Furman posted to their Instagram yesterday, adding that they are also "a mom and have been for a while now (like 2+ years)."
Furman revealed that although she had often described herself as nonbinary in the past and may still be now as well, she's "just gonna sit with that question for the moment" as she focuses instead on womanhood and motherhood.
"I've come to terms with the fact that I am a woman, and yes for me it's complex, but it's complex to be any sort of woman."
They took a moment to gush about motherhood, describing it as "beautiful and holy" but adding no more because "there's enough said in public about the magic of parenthood." Furman posted a photo of the child, blurring out the face for privacy before explaining why they had kept mum on the subject until now, though.
"I have not yet mentioned in public that I'm a parent because I have been afraid of being judged and grilled about it as if it's anyone's business other than mine and my family's," she said. "But I'm telling you I'm a mom now for a specific reason. Because one problem with being trans is that we have so few visions of what it can look like to have an adult life, to grow up and be happy and not die young."
She explained there were "zero examples" of trans mothers raising their children for Furman to consult or emulate. Instead, she went it alone and now wants to be that visible trans parent role model she lacked.
"I'm a trans woman and a mom," they wrote. "This is possible. I never dreamed it was possible to be happy and self-realized and trans and uncloseted, and also become a parent. But it is and I am doing it. Because trans people deserve to pursue the lives we want, on our terms."
Furman has a loyal cult following for her indie-folk-rock style of music. They gained greater fame when they wrote the soundtrack for the Netflix series Sex Education. 'Love You So Bad' can be heard in a trailer for the series.
While admitting that they journey of self-discovery and motherhood has been difficult at time, Furman made clear they were happy with their identity.
"I am very proud to be a trans woman and to have come to know it and be able to say it," they proclaimed while adding "this has not been an easy journey."
