As we find out more and more about the terrifying details of Britney Spears' conservatorship, support for the embattled pop icon is growing. But not all fans think that we can trust everyone who's calling for Britney to be freed.
One of the voices that has recently joined the Free Britney movement is gossip blogger Perez Hilton, who famously talked trash about Spears for years and, according to many, is one of the reasons she's in the conservatorship in the first place. But now, he's apologizing for his past behavior toward the singer.
Hilton is trying to get ahead of the story on this one, but for a lot of people, it feels like too little, too late. On Wednesday he uploaded a nearly 20 minute video titled, "My Message To Britney Spears And The Free Britney Movement."
At the beginning of the video, Hilton starts out by calling out Britney fans who are now, according to him, bullying him. It's only after that, that he acknowledges the pain he caused Spears and the way he talked about the pop star in the past.
"I fully own how reprehensible I used to be back in the day. I can see it, I can acknowledge it, and I carry with me deep shame and regret," he says in the video. "Especially knowing that I contributed to Britney Spears' pain."
But for many, that's not enough.
During the height of Spears' fame, Hilton mercilessly mocked her about her mental health issues. He mocked her addiction issues, called her an unfit mother, spread rumors that she had a sex tape, and even sold t-shirts asking why Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger died in 2008 instead of her.
As The Wrap points out, he even called her "an embarrassment" whose issues stem from her "party lifestyle" in his memoir last year.
"Not Perez Hilton 'supporting' Britney after posting upskirt photos of her and being one of the reasons for her conservatorship in the first place," writer Rin Chupeco tweeted.
Another Twitter user, @hellotefi, tweeted that they're not ready to forgive him. "Perez Hilton helped spread the idea that Britney was insane and unmanageable and dangerous to her children for many years, manipulating images for clicks," they tweeted. "Without Perez Hilton, Jamie Spears would not be as powerful today. To deny that is to deny the sky is blue."
Back in February, when the documentary
Framing Britney Spears was making news,
Hilton admitted that he had regrets about how he treated the singer in the past. "I regret a lot or most of what I said about Britney..." he said. "Thankfully, hopefully, many of us get older and wiser." He also says he's personally apologized to her.
For now, it seems that the wisest thing Hilton could do would be to keep quiet and back out of the discussion. After all the things he's said about Britney in the past, maybe now the best thing he can say is nothing.
