Ricky Martin just told the world he is done letting the haters and homophobes impact his life.
Martin made the declaration after some bigoted folks left hateful comments on pics he recently posted to social media showing the mega-superstar with his husband, Jwan Yosef. The comments reminded him of the fear he experienced when he decided to come out, but this time Martin decided enough was enough. He wasn't going to let the haters or memories from his past prevent him from living life to the fullest as an out and proud gay man.
"A week ago, I uploaded some photos with my husband for a special edition of the magazine @ cap74024," Martin, 49, wrote in Spanish to Instagram, translated by ET Online. "It was a wonderful experience for both of us and a way to celebrate our pride. What I did not expect, especially after all the work that has been done for so many years, is that a large number of people decided to stop following us or comment in a derogatory way."
Martin revealed the comments reminded him of past fears about coming out and the reception he would receive. However, this time around, he refused to bow to the hateful opinions of others. Instead of seeing something shameful, he sees the pics as an expression of beauty and the love he shares with Josef, and wasn't afraid to celebrate that truth.
"Today I see the photos and what I feel is a full peace of being able to celebrate my family as they deserve, in style," Martin wrote. "To celebrate me as I am, regardless of what they will say."
Martin also had a final message for the haters, letting them know he's using their hatred as motivation.
"And that fear that I just talked about no longer paralyzes me," Martin declared. "On the contrary, it gives me much more strength and pushes me to continue working for the well-being of millions of people who suffer every day due to lack of acceptance."
