On Saturday, October 15, Jose Lopez Duvont was crowned the winner of Mr. Gay World 2022. He is the first Puerto Rican, as well as the first contender from the Americas, to win the Mr. Gay World pageant. Throughout the pageant, Duvont also won a total of four awards.
"Duvont, who represented Puerto Rico in South Africa, presented a social impact project to address the body dysmorphia he suffered from as a child, and promote healthy lifestyles within the LGBTQ+ communities," an official statement from the Mr. Gay World pageant reads. "He is also an actor and model and was recognized with the awards for Best National Costume, Best Swimwear, Photogenic, and the Social Media Impact Award."
U.S. contestant Tony Ardolino finished as first runner-up in Mr. Gay World 2022. German contestant Max Appenroth, the first-ever transgender man to compete on Mr. Gay World, placed third overall.
Duvont broke a three-year streak from the Philippines, which had contestants win the 2019, 2020, and 2021 editions of Mr. Gay World. Last year, South African contestant Louw Breytenbach won the pageant but ultimately resigned, which meant that runner-up Joel Rey Carcasona, from the Philippines, assumed the Mr. Gay World reign.
