Tommy Dorfman's husband Peter Zurkuhlen is filing for divorce from the Netflix star after over five years of marriage.
According to online records cited in a report from TMZ, Zurkuhlen just submitted divorce documents at a Los Angeles area courtroom on Tuesday. The pair got engaged in 2015 after knowing each other for over a decade (they met in 2005 via a mutual friend), officially tying the knot in 2016 in a ceremony in Portland, Maine.
Best known for her role in Netflix's teen drama series 13 Reasons Why, Dorfman previously made headlines last year after she publicly came out as a trans woman in an interview with Time where she opened up about her gender identity, her pronouns, and her thoughts on publicly coming out.
"We're talking today to discuss my gender. For a year now, I have been privately identifying and living as a woman--a trans woman," she told the magazine, saying this was her way of reintroducing herself to the world. "It's funny to think about coming out, because I haven't gone anywhere. I view today as a reintroduction to me as a woman, having made a transition medically. Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out. Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman. My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy."
In the Time profile, Dorfman also opened up about how transitioning changed what she is looking for in romantic relationships, and how she and Zurkuhlen have been working on "redefining" their dynamic to that of friends.
"As a result of that shift, the types of romantic partnerships I seek out are different," she said. "I was in a nine-year relationship in which I was thought of as a more male-bodied person, with a gay man. I love him so much, but we've been learning that as a trans woman, what I'm interested in is not necessarily reflected in a gay man. So we've had incredible conversations to redefine our relationship as friends. Transitioning has been liberating and clarifying."
Zurkuhlen showed his support for Dorfman shortly after her coming out in a post to his Instagram Stories where he praised her bravery.
"So much love," he wrote on Instagram at the time. "You are gorgeous and you are fully you. Proud of you, T."
Dorfman has yet to make a public statement about the divorce.
