Jeff Perla and Alex Van Gurp made their reality TV debut on Amazon Prime Video’s dating series The One That Got Away. Hence the title, the premise of the show was to reunite couples who had a lot of potential in their respective relationships but ended up going their separate ways.
The One That Got Away was a queer-inclusive dating series hosted by Betty Who and it was definitely exciting to watch a gay couple trying to make amends and work things out. Overall, Van Gurp and Perla both put in the work and stayed together after filming the show. Alas, Out can now officially confirm that they have broken up.
Perla and Van Gurp shared an exclusive joint statement with Out that reads:
“I think adding so much pressure to a new relationship added challenges that we didn’t expect. With so much time, energy and money involved with the house, it started to feel more like a job than it did a relationship, and I think after a while we realized it was better to end it before we started to resent each other and at least still had a chance of being friends and staying co-owners in our house and business partners. We still have a lot of respect and love for each other but recognized we were going down a bad path. At the end of the day, we couldn’t play house forever.”
It is unfortunate that things didn’t work out for Van Gurp and Perla, but the former couple seems at peace with their breakup and they are able to remain friends. At the end of the day, the goal is for people to achieve peace and happiness, whether that is in or out of a particular relationship.
We wish Perla and Van Gurp nothing but the best in their personal and professional lives!
