The Brazilian superstar has been dealing with bi erasure for years now.

Unfortunately, bisexual erasure is still alive and well.

Anitta came out as bisexual during her 2018 Netflix docuseries Go Anitta. Since then, the singer has had a few public relationships with men, which prompted fans to criticize and question her sexuality over the years. During a recent interview with InStyle, the singer explained:

“The reason why I opened up about it is because here, in Brazil, there was a lot of criticism and a lot of taboos over that. It was a whole job for my security to ask [people] to delete the picture [of me kissing a girl]. People would say [that if] I had kissed girls, I would lose brand deals and everything.”

When dealing with bi erasure, Anitta noted that she isn’t a hypocrite.

“Some people say I am ‘fake bi’ because I never dated a girl like a long-term relationship,” she noted. “But come on, even my relationships with guys cannot last more than three months.”

It’s kind of hilarious (and very relatable!) that Anitta is owning to having a messy dating life that includes various short-term relationships. Because truth be told, most of the public relationships we’ve seen from Anitta were indeed short-lived.

Generally speaking, it’s not inconceivable to think that Anitta has had short-term relationships with women that just weren’t heavily publicized out of fear of losing brand deals. Though Brazil appears to be a very welcoming place to LGBTQ+ people – and, in some ways, it is – the country is also regularly listed as one of the most dangerous destinations for queer people to visit.

On Tuesday, September 12, Anitta took the stage at the 2023 Video Music Awards to perform a medley of her new songs “Used to Be,” “Funk Rave,” “Casi Casi,” and “Grip.” She also won a VMA award in the Best Latin category for the second year in a row. In 2022, Anitta won the trophy for “Envolver.” This year, she won for “Funk Rave.”

The Brazilian superstar and bicon keeps growing her presence in the mainstream music industry, and we couldn’t be more excited to keep up with her global domination!
