It’s been long rumored and speculated that director Baz Luhrmann is gay. However, the Oscar-nominated director of Elvis, Moulin Rouge!, and The Great Gatsby has not identified as such. In fact, he has been married to a woman, Catherine Martin, since 1997.
During a recent interview with the Under the Gloss podcast, Luhrmann’s daughter Lilly talked about how she’s dealt with the rumors about her famous father being gay.
“I did get followed to school, by a truck that was paparazzi. They were bullying my dad there for a little bit there,” Lilly explained. “I specifically remember I was driving in the car, on the radio, this guy was like, ‘Today we’re going to be discussing, is Baz Luhrmann gay? Breaking news, they sleep in two different bedrooms.’”
Lilly’s friends then grilled her in school about whether or not her dad was gay.
According to Lilly, these claims made her feel embarrassed and confused. “Why are they making fun?” she asked herself. “I’m like, ‘They just have different sleeping schedules.’”
As the daughter of a famed director who works with various famous people, Lilly admitted that her childhood wasn’t similar to other kids’. Alas, she doesn’t feel “traumatized” by it, adding that “there [are] worse things to go through.”
Nonetheless, dealing with the rumors about her father being gay was the first that Lilly noticed “something was a bit amiss.”
Elvis is available for streaming on HBO Max.
