In the midst of a challenging time for trans rights in the U.S., Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis continues to be a vocal advocate for her daughter Ruby Guest, a trans woman.
Amidst a climate where anti-trans legislation and rhetoric are increasing, Curtis took to MSNBC's Morning Joeshow last Friday (July 28) to condemn the demonization of trans individuals, describing it as "awful and terrifying."
"I love Ruby. Love her," Curtis passionately stated during the interview, emphasizing that her role as a parent is grounded in love and acceptance. Guest courageously came out as a trans woman in 2020, and together with their mother, they shared their journey in an interview last October.
Curtis firmly rebuked those who praised her for accepting Ruby, as she sees it as a parent's duty to welcome her child for who she truly is. "This human being has come to me and said, 'This is who I am,’” she said. “And my job is to say, 'Welcome home.' I will fight and defend her right to exist to anyone who claims that she doesn’t.”
Acknowledging the gravity of the current political climate targeting trans rights, the Freaky Friday star admitted she is continually learning and growing. Humility is her approach as she wakes up every day sober, acknowledging that she doesn't know everything, but is eager to educate herself on the importance of various issues and understand differing perspectives.
In a complex and uncertain landscape involving trans and other LGBTQ+ rights under attack, Curtis reminds us of the strength of one person’s voice as she continues to use her platform to advocate for love and acceptance as we all move toward a more inclusive environment.
