The Emilia Pérez star, who became the first-ever out trans woman to get nominated for an Oscar, came under fire this week after a flood of problematic and controversial X posts from over the years resurfaced.

As of Friday, it appears that her X/Twitter page — formerly under the handle @karsiagascon — has been officially deactivated. Gascón wrote in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter after deactivating her account:

"I'm sorry, but I can no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect me and my family, so at their request I am closing my account on X. I have been threatened with death, insulted, abused and harassed to the point of exhaustion. I have a wonderful daughter to protect, whom I love madly and who supports me in everything."

The removal came hours after Gascon issued an apology for the posts, first reported on by Variety,

"I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness."

The posts, which were translated by Variety, contain controversial takes on topics ranging from religion to Black Lives Matter. "I am so sick of so much of this sh*t, of islam, of christianity, of catholicism and of all the f*cking beliefs of morons that violate human rights," Gascón wrote in one post.

"I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider Black people to be monkeys without rights and consider policemen to be assassins. They're all wrong," she stated in another.

Out has reached out to Karla Sofía Gascón and Netflix.
