Pop superstar Mariah Carey took the time to make one children's book author's day.
Last year, writer Ian Eagleton published his book Glitter Boy. The story follows a kid named James who is, of course, obsessed with Mariah Carey and navigates educational obstacles and a crush while dreaming of writing a song for his icon. The title is an homage to Carey's 2001 film, Glitter.
On Thursday, April 11, Eagleton shared a letter to Carey on social media. "Dear Mariah," it began. "When I was growing up, being gay was something to be ashamed of and I was bullied terribly for it. There were no LGBTQ+ role models, pioneers or trailblazers who I could look up to. No-one to say, 'I know it's awful now, but you will get through this. I did.' That is until I discovered you, your beautiful voice, and your music."
He shared the story of hearing her song "Honey" for the first time and buying Carey's Daydream album. "It was like you were signing to me, the little kid who was so scared and afraid. Your music and your lyrics offered solace, companionship, and a reminder that, with a little self-belief, I would make it through the rain."
Eagleton goes on to talk about his family, how the main character is based on his son of the same name, and how Carey is still uplifting his life. He then offered to send Carey a copy of the book.
To his surprise, Carey responded to his post.
"I saw it and I got the book," she wrote. "YOU are an inspiration. LOVE YOU." Carey concluded the post with three red heart emojis.
Icon behavior!
Eagleton excitedly responded to Carey's repost with a joke. "Ian’s ghost will now be managing his social media account." He also took a screenshot of Carey's post and made it his image header.
