Before 'Mid-Century Modern': Revisit Matt Bomer's most memorable gay roles

There are few actors with the classic good looks and supreme talent of Matt Bomer.
Bomer has been a star on stage and screen for nearly three decades now, making his TV debut on the soap opera All My Children in 2000. Now, 25 years (and lots of Ryan Murphy projects) later, he's a multiple Golden Globe and Emmy nominee, a Peabody winner, and a beloved star.
Bomer is currently starring as part of the "gay Avengers" alongside Nathan Lane and Nathan Lee Stewart in the new sitcom Mid-Century Modern, fresh off another show with an all-star gay cast: Fellow Travelers.
Bomer also kills it in straight roles, as evidenced by movies like the Magic Mike franchise and tv shows like White Collar. But as queer fans, we especially love it when he plays gay, which, thankfully, he's done many times.
Here's a look back at some of Bomer's major gay roles throughout his career.
The New Normal
Bomer appeared in the episode "The Goldie Rush" of this Ryan Murphy sitcom about a gay couple (played by Andrew Rannells and Justin Bartha) who choose a surrogate mother (Georgia King), who then moves in with them. Bomer played Monte, the ex-boyfriend of Brian, Rannell's character.
Available to rent on Prime Video.
The Normal Heart
Bomer started getting serious awards attention for his acting with his role in this TV movie, earning Critics' Choice, Dorian, Golden Globe, and Emmy nominations. In The Normal Heart, Bomer plays Felix Turner, a closeted gay man living in New York during the rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis. Mark Ruffalo, Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons, Alfred Molina, Joe Mantello, Jonathan Groff, and Julia Roberts also starred.
Available to stream on Max.
American Horror Story: Freak Show
By 2014, Bomer was a regular in the Ryan Murphy universe, playing a gay sex worker who ends up getting brutally murdered in one episode of American Horror Story: Freak Show.
Available to stream on Hulu.
Will & Grace
Bomer worked with Max Mutchnick and David Kohan (the creators of Mid-Century Modern) on their classic sitcom Will & Grace when it returned to the air in 2017. Bomer joined for season 10 in 2018 for six episodes as handsome gay news anchor McCoy Whitman, who dates Will.
Available to stream on Hulu.
Doom Patrol
Bomer has a long history of voicing superheroes like Superman and The Flash in animated movies, and in 2019, got his chance to play a live-action superhero who is also gay in the off-kilter comic book show Doom Patrol. In Doom Patrol, he played Larry Trainor, aka Negative Man, a former U.S. Air Force pilot who was disfigured in a plane crash and now is covered in bandages and shares his body with a negative energy being.
Available to stream on Max.
The Boys in the Band
Based on the play of the same name that Bomer also starred in, The Boys in the Band follows a group of gay men at a birthday party in Manhattan in 1968. Bomer plays Donald, a handsome gay man who moved out of New York City and is undergoing therapy.
Available to stream on Netflix.
Fellow Travelers
Bomer was nominated for an Emmy and Golden Globe for his role as Hawk Fuller, a closeted government worker who falls in love with an idealistic younger man (played by Jonathan Bailey) throughout several decades of American history in this Peabody-winning show.
Available to stream on Paramount+.
Mid-Century Modern
Bomer's latest gay role is in this hilarious sitcom where he plays ditzy flight attendant Jerry Frank, the youngest member of a group of gay friends (with Nathan Lane and Nathan Lee Graham) who move in together to a Palm Springs house following the death of the fourth member of their group.
Available to stream on Hulu.
