A seemingly awkward exchange between the two main Kens of Barbiehas some scratching their heads.
A clip from Canada's Etalk program at the Toronto premiere — held before actors in the SAG/AFTRA union began striking — shows Ryan Gosling, the movie's main Ken, posing with Simu Liu, Barbieland's other eligible beach bachelor. Liu, the star of Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, puts his arm around Gosling's lower back. Gosling then pulls away and mutters something to Liu, who removes his arm and says to his co-star, "Too tender?"
Why did Gosling not want Liu's fetching hands on him? Well, there is no beef between the Canadian actors, according to Liu.
In an Instagram story, Liu responded to the minor uproar, referring to a "beach off" joke from the movie:
"I'd beach off with this Kenadian again in a heartbeat. He is the best human in every way, especially when he jokes around with us on the carpet and on set, infecting all of us with his Kenergy."
Hmm, maybe Gosling is just not that comfortable with man-on-man affection. After the strike, we suggest he sign on to a gay-themed romance — preferably with Liu as the love interest. We like Liu's Kenergy, even if some of his past online behavior bordered on problematic.
