The hit HBO series is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed video game of the same name, set in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a deadly fungal infection. At its core, The Last of Us follows Joel Miller, played by the internet's boyfriend Pedro Pascal, and Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey. Besides the heart-stopping action of the show, The Last of Us has also been widely praised for its emotional depth and powerful storytelling — including its commitment to queer representation.

Season 2 continues to embrace that legacy, diving deeper into Ellie's journey as she navigates love, loss, and survival. Fans will finally see Ellie's relationship with Dina (played by Madame Web star Isabela Merced) unfold on screen. A romance that plays a pivotal role in the video game sequel that inspired this new season of the TV show.

Out caught up with the stars of The Last of Us season 2 who walked the red carpet and celebrated the HBO show's world premiere.

"We love a slow burn, but there will be rewards for you at the end," Merced teased, hinting at the much-anticipated romance between Ellie and Dina. "You'll be really happy with the end product. As someone who is very fluid like myself, I really appreciate the character I play, Dina. I see it as representation — I love a character that isn't so cookie-cutter. No bisexual erasure."

Tati Gabrielle, who joined the season 2 cast as Nora, encouraged LGBTQ+ fans to continue being vocal. "Continue to rep and continue to rep hard and loud. Continue to trump any naysayers around you. For those who don't want to see a progressive world — ignore it."

Danny Ramirez, who stepped into the role of Manny, spoke about the resilience that is found at the heart of The Last of Us. "The show has a ton of resilience, and you'll see people use the magic they have inside to break through barriers that seem unbreakable."

For Spencer Lord, who plays Owen, The Last of Us is about more than just survival: It's about finding your people. "The show is about love and community. Find your people and stick with those who really uplift you."

Reprising her role as Maria in the series, Rutina Wesley wants queer fans to remember that "we are here, and we're here to stay! It's being represented well in the show. And there will be some surprises. People need to watch, but know we're representing, for sure."

Another star who voiced out a message was Merle Dandridge, who portrayed Marlene in season 1. "First of all, in this climate… We love you. We see you, and hold space for you. We stand with you. When we tell individual human stories with their triumph and spirit, we inform people how very much we are the same. That needs to be at the forefront."

The Last of Us season 2 premieres Sunday, April 13 on Max.
