JoJo Siwa made Dancing with the Stars history last night!
During Monday's season premiere of Dancing with the Stars, queer teen superstar JoJo Siwa made history when she became the first female celebrity paired with a female dancer when she danced with pro Jenna Johnson. And that's not it: despite Johnson slipping during the performance, the pair had the highest score of the night!
"This is a whole new ball game for me. I've never done anything ballroom before," Siwa said in a video package before her dance. "It's a learning experience that I'm more than ready for."
She also commented on the importance of her history-making performance. "For the first time in Dancing with the Stars history, I am dancing with another female, and I'm really, really proud. I came out in early 2021 and what I love to do is make truly being who you are easier for kids."
Siwa and Johnson scored a 29 out of a possible 40 for their first dance, the foxtrot. Both Johnson and Siwa took to social media to express their gratitude to their fans and viewers for supporting them.
"I couldn't ask for a better partner! Thank you for taking me through this process while making it the most fun ever," Siwa posted on Instagram. "The CREW on DWTS is so amazing, the CAST is all so fun! Making history and Top score of the night was literally a dream come true for me. Chase every dream you have and believe in yourself. Know that I love you all and I am smiling so big right now because of you, we did this!!!"
Johnson expressed her gratitude to Siwa for breaking the barrier. "There aren't enough words to express my absolute admiration for you," she said. "The moment I met you, I knew that you were going to change my life. You are full of love, laughter, positivity, and GLITTER!!!"
Siwa and Johnson will dance again next Monday on ABC when Dancing with the Stars returns.
