While accepting the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Award for Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series for his docuseries Hollywood Black over the weekend, Simien called Trump's takeover a "white nationalist coup" and encouraged people to fight against it.

Best known for the film Dear White People (which premiered at Sundance in 2014) and the subsequent Netflix series of the same name, Simien accepted the Independent Spirit Award for Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series for his four-part docuseries Hollywood Black, which looks back at the last century of the Black experience in Hollywood.

During his speech, Simien encouraged people to examine the past if they want to create a better future.

"If you're serious about stopping the white nationalist coup taking over this country, how about amplifying Black history," he said onstage. "Because Black people, we’ve been in a fascist country this whole time. Maybe start with Hollywood Black."

Simian had previously won the Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay for Dear White People.

He wasn't the only person to speak out against Trump and his new policies at the Spirit Awards. White Lotus star Natasha Rothwell, who created and starred in the best ensemble in a new scripted series winner How to Die Alone, spoke in support of the trans community, who has been the target of many of Trump's early executive orders.

"To the trans community that is under attack right now, know that you are not alone," she said.. "I see you, we see, we stand with you."

Other queer winners at the 2025 Spirit Awards included stars like Maisy Stella for Best Breakthrough Performance for My Old Ass. Moreover, Richard Gadd, Nava Mau, and Jessica Gunning, who won Lead Performance, Supporting Performance, and Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series for Baby Reindeer.

Hollywood Black is streaming on Prime Video.
