With the popularity of RuPaul's Drag Race, there have come the inevitable spinoffs. There was Drag U, a short-lived version that still stays close to Ru's own heart. And of course there's All Stars, which just completed its fourth season. But, like American Idol and America's Next Top Model before it, it has also been spun into international versions with the impending UK run launching this year, and Drag Race Thailand, which is in its second season. And what a season it is.
Drag Race Thailand comes built on pretty much the same idea as the original show: drag queens compete in weekly challenges as well as runways to progress along, being matched up in head-to-head lip syncs when they are put in the bottom. And sure there are a few differences -- lip syncs include not only internationally renowned bops but also some more local tracks, and instead of just RuPaul as the host with Michelle Visage as sidekick, Pangina Heals and Art-Araya In-dra play as co-hosts. And it was in a recent lip sync, that the series got its recent moment that went viral on Reddit.
\u201cI CAN'T BREATHE. I LOVE SRIMALA. #DragRaceTH\u201d— KudaLakorn (@KudaLakorn) 1552886719
In the clip, which made it to the front page of the Drag Race subreddit, Heals is announcing the queens who must lip sync. "The next name I call out will be safe and will not have to lip sync tonight," she said according to a caption, translated by Kuda Lakorn. Cue dramatic music. "And the next queen is." Cue a few bars of Frozen's "Let it Go." Wait, what?
In the challenge, queens had dressed up as superheroes. As one of the props, Srimala brought a kid's toy that played a few notes from Frozen, which she, in the tense moment, accidentally activated. Ru's girls aspire.
But while we're here: last week the US version of the show hosted its first ever six-way lip sync. And although Thailand has never had a six way, twice Araya has gotten fed up with the competitors and put three in the lip sync. That's how we got this iconic moment from Annee Maywong in a matchup against Jaja and Petchara. We have no choice but to stan Thailand's drag queens.
