Monét X Change Makes Opera Debut in The Daughter of the Regiment
Step aside for the fabulous Duchess of Krakenthorp.
This drag queen is becoming a drag duchess.
Monet X Change will play the Duchess of Krakenthorp in Minnesota Opera's production of Gaetano Donizetti's The Daughter of the Regiment this February.
Though the role of Krakenthorp is un-singing, X Change is indeed a classically trained bass. "Doing a role in drag is something that this lil gay boy from college never thought would be a thing," she wrote on Instagram.
"This cameo role has a storied history of portrayal by actors and public figures," wrote Minnesota Opera on Instagram, "including late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader-Ginsburg."
X Change is not the first Drag Race queen to grace the opera stage. In 2020, season nine winner Sasha Velour lip synced to Angelica Negron's The Island We Made in a film by Opera Philadelphia.
After competing in the 10th season of RuPaul's Drag Race, Monet won the fourth season of All Stars alongside Trinity the Tuck. She then returned for All Stars 7, where her Variety Show performance of "Vi ravvisoo luoghi ameni" from Vincenzo Bellini's La Sonnambula received both love and hate.

"If you don't understand opera... just say that," Bob the Drag Queen defended X Change on Twitter. "If you don't have the sophistication, understanding, and attention span to appreciate something other (than) kicks and splits, just admit it."
