Drag is very patriotic!

Manhattan's flashy Times Square was even flashier this Fourth of July as a billboard went up reminding folks of the long legacy of American drag.

Produced by Uncommon Creative Studio and RuPaul's Werk the World tour, the billboard depicts the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence and reads: "The declaration of independence was written by men in wigs, heels & tights. Drag is a first amendment right. This Independence Day, support your local LGBTQ+ charity." (There's Trans Law Center or The Point Foundation or National Black Justice Coalition and many, many others.)

The design studio wrote in a statement that the billboard's impetus is the numerous bans or limitations on drag being passed in states like Tennessee and Florida.

"This billboard aims to raise awareness and show the hypocrisy of right-wing figures using the Founding Fathers rhetoric to pass bills that go against the freedoms they fought for," the studio writes. "That’s why, now more than ever, it’s so important to support your local LGBTQ+ charity.
