RuPaul's Drag Race legends Detox and Naomi Smalls were the special guests for the viewing party of All Stars 9 episode 1 at Roscoe's Tavern in Chicago. Also reviewing this grand premiere were All Stars 8 star Naysha Lopez and her main cohosts, Batty Davis and Kara Mel D'Ville.
For many years, All Stars 2 finalist Detox explained her reasons for not wanting to be a part of Drag Race anymore and maintained that opinion over time. For instance, Detox told Yahoo Australia in 2022:
"I've done Drag Race twice now. I don't need to do it again. I would like to see them use some of the other entertainers on all the other different platforms that they're doing. I mean, I love Jujubee so much, but I don't need to see Jujubee on everything that's a spinoff. There are almost 200 queens at this point — from just the American franchise alone — that are all really deserving to have a little bit of recognition and spotlight, and I think they could maybe switch the barrel up a little bit."
And yet, a new hope (not a Star Wars reference, but it could be!) came during this recent viewing party at Roscoe's. When asked if she would return to the show considering the new no-eliminations format of All Stars 9, Detox said:
"Even if there were [eliminations], I have an itch, honestly. And I haven't had it in so long. I've gotten more into Drag Race again after the last couple of seasons… like having Sasha [Colby] on, [and] having so many of my other friends on. I miss that like camaraderie in the werk room. I miss the fun of it. It's like new and exciting. For years I was like, 'No, f*ck them.' And now I'm like, 'Oh… wait a minute now.'"
Naysha then turned the question over to Naomi, who made it to the grand finale on both Drag Race season 8 and All Stars 4. The leg-endary queen replied:
"I don't feel like 'f*ck them.' I feel like RuPaul's Drag Race is such a pageant. I mean, it's a competition. I love a competition. I love winning, and I haven't won yet, so… who knows? One day. But watching this season, you have your friends there, and they're all friends together, [and] you have a little bit of FOMO."
If you're asking us, we'd give ANYTHING to see both of these queens making iconic returns to Drag Race for another lap. Detox is probably feeling extra inspired by watching her BFF, Roxxxy Andrews, doing amazing on All Stars 9. As for Naomi, it seems like the door was never fully closed for her to compete again.
Even more exciting thought: can you imagine Detox and Naomi competing side by side in the same season? Gagged us a bit… for sure!
