China Approves First Gay Film For Theatrical Release
After a year of deliberations, censors approved the film in its entirety.
For the first time, Chinese censors have approved the theatrical release of an LGBT film without demanding any cuts. Seek McCartney, a Chinese-French production, stars pop star Han Geng alongside actor Jeremie Elkaim, and recieved the greenlight after a year of deliberation.
In response to the news, Director Wang Chao called it "a small step for the regulator and a big step for filmmakers. It was not easy, but was delightful."
Earlier this year, another film featuring a same-sex kiss, The Dead End, was also approved. Seek McCartney will be the first mainstream Chinese release for a gay-driven film.
