Transparent, Orange is The New Black, Bessie win at the Screen Actors Guild

As A-listers debate whether or not they should boycott the Oscars, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, held in L.A. on Saturday, seemed to make up for a lot of the Academy's oversights.

In the movies category, award season favorites Leonardo DiCaprio and Brie Larson won for their leading performances in The Revenant and Room, respectively. A noted absentee on the Academy Awards' list, Idris Elba won the first of his two trophees of the night for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role in Beast of No Nations --later, he grabbed the SAG Award for Best Actor in a Mini Series with Luther)-- while Alicia Vikander won for her supporting role in The Danish Girl.

Spotlight took home the coveted Oustanding Cast Performance award, beating out Best of No Nations and Straight Outta Compton -- which got nominated, at least.

In the television category, Orange is The New Black (OITNB) and Downtown Abbey won the best ensemble cast awards, respectively for best comedy series and best drama series. A standout was Uzo Aduba, who snatched a second SAG Awards for her outstanding performance as Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren in OITNB.

Speaking of trendy acronyms and black women winning big, HTGAWM and Viola Davies got their dues as the Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actress in a Drama Series; and Queen Latifah was honored for her role as lesbian blues singer Bessie Smith in the TV movie category, for the HBO-produced Bessie. The Oscar-nominee beat out fierce competition from the likes of Kristen Wiig, Susan Sarandon, and Christina Ricci, who were all up for the prize.

Veteran actors also received praise: Jeffrey Tambor won Oustanding Performance by a Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Transparent, while Kevin Spacey received the same award in the drama category for House of Cards. The stunt ensemble awards went to Game of Thrones and Mad Max: Fury Road, although it is not clear how many statuettes had to be made for those epic casts.
