Premiere: Lena Hall Covers ‘The Bitch is Back,’ Honors Elton John in ‘Obsessed’ Series
As part of her ongoing Obsessed series, Tony Award winner and Grammy nominee Lena Hall has been releasing a new EP on the first Friday of every month in 2018, covering some of her favorite artists and musicals. For the March edition, queer rock icon Elton John is Hall's latest obsession, and it's not hard to see why.
"Sir Elton John is on the list as one of my all-time favorites. His songs are beautiful, fun, storytelling and catchy and his voice is gritty and soulful," said Hall. "He isn't shy of rhinestones and feathers and his ornate performances are something to behold. A true singer songwriter and a stellar live performer."
Hall's EP will feature five of John's songs of varying popularity: "The Bitch is Back," "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," "Take Me to the Pilot," "Have Mercy on the Criminal," and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." Though each song means something special to Hall, it was one of them in particular that made John an easy choice for this project.
"'Have Mercy on the Criminal' is the reason why I included Elton in the first season of Obsessed. This unknown and un-covered blues song hits me deep. I've sung this song many, many times and it will continue to be a part of my repertoire," she said. "I like to include some deeper cuts that are my favorites to try and lure people into looking up the original versions and hopefully check out the rest of the catalogue."
Obsessed: Elton John releases on iTunes and Amazon Friday, March 2 with other videos to follow "The Bitch is Back." Watch below, and shop the series, also available on SKB records, here.
