Our Predictions for Who Will (and Should) Win Tonight’s Golden Globes

Lady Gaga, Rami Malek, Billy Porter

From Billy Porter and "Pose" to Lady Gaga and Darren Criss.

No matter how much I've tried to avoid it, awards season is among us. The Golden Globes kick off the two-month sprint on Sunday where some of our faves -- Lady Gaga, Billy Porter and Pose, are obviously up for golden statues. But ahead of the festivities, I've got some predictions on who will -- and should -- win honors from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in the top categories. Check them out below and stay tuned to OUT for all your awards season updates.

MOTION PICTURE AWARDS

Best Motion Picture - Drama

Will win:A Star Is Born

Should win: Black Panther

Every award this season seems to be A Star is Born's to lose. But if I had my way, Ryan Coogler's Black Panther would get its due recognition, because a nomination is simply not enough.

Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Will win:Green Book or The Favourite

Should win:Crazy Rich Asians

Hollywood loves a feel-good, white savior-esque picture (The Help and Driving Miss Daisy are the obvious examples), but the HFPA doesn't always follow suit with awarding such films a trophy. Plus, Yorgos Lanthimos's The Favourite is a critical favorite. But I think Crazy Rich Asians should take home the statue, for its beauty, hilarity, and win for representation.

Best Motion Picture - Foreign Language

Will win:Roma

Should win:Roma

I didn't care for Roma, but it's a shoe-in. And finally, Netflix's Girl will be laid to anti-trans rest.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama

Will win: Lady Gaga, A Star is Born

Should win: Lady Gaga, A Star is Born

I know it's not right to speak ill of Mother Monster, and for once, I won't. The world is still talking about her performance as Ally and the Globes already gave her a trophy for her American Horror Story: Hotel role.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama

Will win: Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born or Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody

Should win: John David Washington, Blackkklamsman

It's a toss up between Cooper and Malek. Everyone loves the feat Cooper accomplished, writing, directing and starring in his picture, but Malek's enthralling turn as Freddie Mercury is memorable -- I personally can't get those prosthetic teeth out of my mind. I think Washington in Spike Lee's Blackkklansman bests them both though. He just transported me into world of the film more effectively.

Asians3

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Will win: Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns

Should win: Constance Wu, Crazy Rich Asians

Somebody has got to win for representing Crazy Rich Asians, but the HFPA loves a musical, even if the critics were torn on it.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Will win: Christian Bale, Vice

Should win: Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Poppins Returns

Miranda still deserves any award that comes his way for the wonder that is Hamilton. But this award goes to Bale's transformation into VP Dick Cheney.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture

Will win: Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk

Should win: Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk

No explanation needed.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture

Will win: Mahershala Ali, Green Book

Should win: Mahershala Ali, Green Book

The Globes blew its chance to recognize Ali's greatness in Moonlight. Now's the time to rectify its oversight.

Best Director - Motion Picture

Will win: Alfonso Cuaron, Roma

Should win: Spike Lee, Blackkklansman

Cuaron's run the gamut of director honors for Roma thus far and will likely continue to do so. Lee's speech would be more exciting to watch though.

Barry Jenkins, If Beale Street Could Talk

Best Screenplay - Motion Picture

Will win:The Favourite

Should win:If Beale Street Could Talk

Considering The Favourite might go empty-handed in every other category, this would be a great chance for the HFPA to honor the period drama. But Barry Jenkins' pure adaptation of James Baldwin's If Beale Street Could Talk deserves accolades here.

Best Original Song - Motion Picture

Will win: "Shallow," A Star Is Born

Should win: "Shallow," A Star Is Born

There's literally no other choice as worthy as the emotional banger.

TELEVISION AWARDS

Best Television Series - Drama

Will win:Pose

Should win:Pose

I'm putting all my money toward the idea that Pose will take home this deserved recognition. Not only is it the year's best new show, but the HFPA loves Ryan Murphy.

Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy

Will win:The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Should win:The Good Place

I'm not sure any show can overcome the perennial favorite that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has become.

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Will win:The Assassination of Gianni Versace

Should win:A Very English Scandal

Again, they love Ryan Murphy. But maybe that's a reason to recognize another show, especially if Pose pulls through in its categories. I'm taking a gamble and going with A Very English Scandal, about a member of Parliament who was tried and acquitted of conspiring to murder his ex-lover. I'm sure the European contingent of the HFPA will want to honor the BBC mini series.

Seven_seconds_s01e05_still

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Will win: Amy Adams, Sharp Objects

Should win: Regina King, Seven Seconds

King should win all things, every single time, but Sharp Objects is an Emmy-winning show right up the HFPA's alley. I'd be okay with Amy Adams taking this honor.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Will win: Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace

Should win: Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace

Criss should win, if only because it'll encourage him to stick with his commitment to stop taking gay roles. He's surely the frontrunner, but any of the other nominees could eek out a win.

Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Drama

Will win: Julia Roberts, Homecoming

Should win: MJ Rodriguez, Pose

You don't nominate a legend like Julia Roberts and not give her the award. But MJ Rodriguez deserves the upset here. I know she's not nominated, but I said what I said!

Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series - Drama

Will win: Matthew Rhys, The Americans

Should win: Billy Porter, Pose

The likelihood that Porter reigns supreme is slim as Pose is truly an ensemble effort. Considering The Americans made its final bow last year, a win for Matthew Rhys could be a catch-all honor for the show critics love.

Jenji Kohan Glow

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy

Will win: Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Should win: Kristen Bell, The Good Place or Alison Brie, GLOW

Both The Good Place and GLOW haven't gotten their due honors, and Bell and Brie are the best parts of each. But the mighty power of Mrs. Maisel will keep them in their seats.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy

Will win: Sacha Baron Cohen, Who Is America?

Should win: Donald Glover, Atlanta

No other nominee kept me intrigued to the point of Donald Glover in Atlanta, but Sacha Baron Cohen's wacky Who Is America? might land him his second Globe. The first was for his equally wacky Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan in 2006.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Will win: Penelope Cruz, The Assassination of Gianni Versace

Should win: Thandie Newton, Westworld

Cruz is a sleeper nominee of the year, with Mrs. Maisel's Alex Borstein and Sharp Objects' Patricia Clarkson, leading the pack. But I've got faith. Either way, what Thandie Newton is doing on Westworld is a marvel.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Will win: Henry Winkler, Barry

Should win: Henry Winkler, Barry

I believe in giving industry vets their flowers while they can still smell them. After a surprise Emmy win last year, Winkler is more than deserving.
