Sing Out Louise, ‘Gypsy’ Is Coming Back to the Silver Screen

‘Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is reviving the iconic musical.

Here she is, boys! Here she is, world! Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino (yes, with the top hat) is remaking Gypsy for the silver screen, according to Variety. How do you like them egg rolls, Mr. Goldstone?

Sherman-Palladino, also the creator of Gilmore Girls, is in talks to resurrect the beloved Broadway musical. A Barbra Streisand-produced revival was in the works in 2016 with STX Entertainment financing, but STX eventually backed out, leaving the project in limbo. Now, New Regency is fronting the cash with Joel Silver (of The Matrix and Lethal Weapon) producing. If you've seen the sumptuous production on Mrs. Maisel (all those hats!) you already know that Sherman-Palladino is pretty good at acquiring financing.

Sherman-Palladino is also on a roll right now. After making mostly cult classics for years (Gilmore Girls and the ABC Family favorite Bunheads) she's achieved major success with Mrs. Maisel, for which she's won four Emmys. Known for quick, witty dialogue and creating sharp, intelligent, complicated female characters (not to mention her love of musicals), Gypsy makes perfect sense for Sherman Palladino.

For those unfamiliar, and if you're gay and don't know the plot of Gypsy you need Jesus, the musical follows Mama Rose, an overbearing stage mom trying to turn her daughter Baby June into a vaudeville star. When June defects, her quiet daughter Louise becomes the legendary burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee. The show features legendary songs like "Rose's Turn," "Everything's Coming Up Roses," and "Some People."

Gypsy has seen multiple Broadway incarnations, with everyone from Bernadette Peters to Patti LuPone playing the iconic Mama Rose. And of course there's the 1962 film version starring Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood, and Bette Midler's 1993 TV adaptation.

But what will Gypsy look like today? My whole body is literally shaking -- there are so many questions! Who will play Mama Rose? Louise? Tulsa? How will Sherman-Palladino reckon with Gypsy's problematic title (spoiler alert: she probably just won't). This remake has the possibility to be huge -- Gypsy is one of the most celebrated musicals of all time, boots. And once again, it's Rose's turn!
